I can't quit checking the THF to see how opening day is going for everyone. A lot of birds were dropped this AM all over the state. Apparently Frisco sounds like WWIII. I wish I was out there. This sucks. We had our Flock of Seagulls take a few customers out today to shoot a few birds. From what I've heard, they did okay. They were sure to bitch about how hot it was and how sweaty their shirts were. We call them the flock of seagulls because they are outside salesmen. You know, a seagull's main mission in life is to swoop in, squawk, shit, and fly off. That's what they do. They don't consider how insulting it is to an inside guy when they call us up and bitch about how f*cking hot it is on the golf course or hunting spot. The thing is though, they wouldn't make it one second in the hot seat I sit in everyday and can't hold a candle to the shit I do daily under stress. It's kind of comical really to hear them complain about dumb shit.

I'm right there with you on those guys. We have several of them in our office. The thing is, they have no clue what they're selling, what it takes to build it, how much to sell it for, or anything else. I have to put the deal together, then they're the face of this place with the customer. All they do is go out, have fun, eat steaks, play golf and entertain. They all drive fancy cars, have big houses, and generally do whatever the fuck they want. I hate them.

That's for another day. Opening weekend was a success, mostly. I dropped Hudson off at daycare, packed up and headed out to the lease. Got there around 12:30 and got my feeder and camera going for good. Then, Finch showed up, so we started drinking some cold ones. Made it out to the big tank on the place, which just so happens to be about 5-6 feet low, and reduced to a mud puddle pretty much. Either way, we sat out there and shot 16 total. I got 12, he got 4. Should have had at least 25 or so, but I think the beers caught up with us at the end. Finch got up to walk around a bit, and right as he was behind the tank dam, I had 3-4 groups fly in, all in the 3-8 bird range. Unfortunately, I missed every last one of them. I'm yelling for Finch to get the hell over there, and once he does, it slowed down again. So, he missed out on the biggest flurry. We had another flurry shortly after where they were dropping in from every direction. I shot one, which was clearly hit, then turned a 180 and flew straight eye for eye back to me. I could see the desperation in his little beady black eyes. Then I shot him dead. All that was left was a poof of dove feathers in the wind, since he was literally about 15-20 feet from me. Reed did great with the new collar. He's like a new dog out there now. The next day we didn't have any luck at all. No birds in the AM, but the weather was getting cooler. In the afternoon, Fischer and Tick joined up with us for the hunt. The wind was blowing 15-20 the whole time. We only managed 5 birds (3 for me, 2 for Tick), but we had a great time. That night, I get a call at 1:30 AM from my wife, that Hudson was sick and had to go to the emergency room. Apparently she had a 103 degree fever for a few hours, and the pediatrician said since she was so young, someone need to check her out. The only place open was the emergency room, so they got up and headed in. I took off from the lease, and by the time I got home (5 AM), they were both getting home too. She's ok, but has a viral infection (something like a cold, or flu-like illness). Been a rough sleepless couple of days around here. Today her fever broke and she's getting better. Eventful weekend for sure. Tyler and I are joking now about how the baby just decided she didn't want me to stay away for two nights so soon...I'll be going back out again soon. This cool front looks like it brought a lot more birds into town here. Here are some pics of the Friday night hunt.

It's a message board tracking device. If he gets on this board, it shocks the hell out of him.
Speaking of shock. Finch and I also tried out the collar on ourselves. I only went to level 4, but he took up to level 6 like a man.

I haven't shocked Reed with anything over 3. If I ever feel like I need to go above that with him, I'll do it to myself. Until then, I can guess what it feels like.

We had a pronged taser gun at Float Trip 08, and holy shIt that bitch would make you ride the lightning for a few seconds. It burns more than it hurts from shock.

What is it with guys and shock collars? Sadly this isn't the first group of guys that I have talked to that take part in this. I just wish I could witness it at some point in time, I'm sure it is entertainment of epic proportions.

At first it just feels like a quick little nick, or a pin prick. As you go up in strength it holds onto you for a bit.

Pic doesn't show up....could be stupid work computer....
I'll stick to letting the males shock each other and hearing the stories later....there would have to be alot of beer involved for me to agree to that.

Well, I had decided to stay home for the weekend, but Tick emailed Friday around noon and said the dove were everywhere. I'm easily swayed to go hunting, so I cleared it with the wife, and hauled ass outta here Friday afternoon. I got to the lease at 6 and met him in the field at the same old tank we always hunt. Several more birds there than before, and we shot 10 before it got dark. Tick's cousin owns some land in the area, and a restaurant bar in San Saba, so we checked that out. If you're ever in San Saba, you have to check out Diggs. Great place. He invited us to his field the next day. We had no idea what we were in for. That next morning, we got out there before light, and by the time the sun was actually up, we had our limits. Amazing day for damn sure. I've never seen anything like it. We even got a few ringneck dove as a bonus. His cousin joined us after we were done and he even got Reed some more work and got his limit with 30-40 mins. Unreal. Birds coming right into us... Those shredded sunflower stalks hurt the feet after retrieving over 50 birds... Breaktime... Done... We did the exact same thing the next day. Easy limits all around and headed home early. My freezer is full of birds, so let me know when you're ready for a cookout. Couple of pics I pulled from the game cam...

I ran out to Scheu's place for an afternoon hunt yesterday and struck out for the first time this year. Not too bad, I guess for this being my 8th hunt of the year so far. Birds didn't fly in til very late. Nathan got 1 and Scheu got 1. I fired 6 shots. One hit and feathers flew everywhere, but he landed somewhere in the trees and couldn't find him.
It was good to get outside and shoot the gun though. Gearing up for a couple of hunts in Vernon this weekend, then a trip to the lease next weekend.
