Well, it's been eventful so far.
Cliff Lee getting a 7 year offer from the Yanks.
Crawford going to Boston. Adrian Gonzales to Boston.
Rangers in on everyone, including Grienke, along with everyone else.
Michael Young trade rumors...
And now, Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg and Thad Levine are in flight to Little Rock to get a deal done with Cliff Lee.

Its time to let the cliff Lee ream go. 7 Years is too much for a player of his age IMO. There have also been talks of a Matt Garza trade which intrigues me as well. I am hoping that Lee has wanted to stay in Texas all along but is just using the FA process to raise his contract and maybe he will stay in Texas for less than that 7 year deal the Yanks offered him. This is obviously just a pipe dream but you never know.

Seems like I remember Beltre having an attitude problem and am not sure he would fit on this team. However I would love o have his bat and anything is an upgrade defensively at third. Maybe a team like this would cancel out a bad attitude though. Or maybe I am confusing him with another player's problems.

Colin Cowherd made some very solid points for Lee going to the Rangers this morning on his show. Said even if the Yankees offer more than Rangers, Lee could still make more with the Rangers because of New York's State and City income tax. Also talked about the cost of living difference and that he didn't think Lee was the type of guy that wants to pay 20 mil to live in a over decorated shoe box for most of the year when he could live on a ranch for that in Texas.
But he also said that the Yankees could offer a contract so ridiculously high that the Union and Lee's agent would put pressure on him to sign for the better of future contracts, which to me is flat out retarded.
To me the Rangers really can't lose in this situation. Offer as much as you are comfortable with, and let the chips fall where they may. Let the Yankees over pay if they want to. In 3 years you will be better off and they will be right back where they started.

Agree, the stuff about the taxes has been brought up a lot around here. Colin Cowherd is the same slap who said Lee was mailing it in during his stint with the Rangers because he knew he was going to get the big contract from the Yankees anyways.

Its going to come down to whether he really likes Texas and wants to play here. There is no way he will make more money here.

I think its something like a 7 or 8 million dollar difference from NY to TX that would make it equal after taxes. NY is sure to out bid more than that.

NY is offering 7 years, $161M or $23M/year. 6 years, $144M or $24M/year. or 5 years, $125M or $25M/year.
I'm not sure about the difference when you factor in taxes, but if it's close to $1M per year, I think the Rangers should offer 6 years for $23.5M per year. Then see what happens.
If I was him?
What the hell is the difference in $23M per year and $25M per year. Not a damn thing. You're still gonna die with a shitload of money you can never spend. It's all about quality of life. And it gets no better than the Great State of TEXAS. or staying in Arkansas and spending all that time in teh Great State of TEXAS. Hell, I'll throw in a free hunt to close the deal.

I don't like the Beltre idea. Yeah, he's good. But he's been around and is getting up there in years too. Stick with Young for now, and bring up a 3rd baseman in the next 2-3 years.

Sounds like it was a really important meeting in Arkansas last night. Everyone say Chuck and JD still sound confident. I think it would be so great if Lee took less money to come here and leave NY in the dust. Then they would be 0-2 with the big named FAs.

We should know something by the end of the weekend. Either way, if we went up to 7 years, that sucks.
Also, there's a pretty good column by evan grant in the Morning News today. Talking about how Greenberg left Nolan Ryan with his dick in his hand and went to deal directly with an agent. Similar to what Hicks did with ARod.

Nolan was following the philosophy of...if he wants to play here, he'll let us know what it'll cost.
Greenberg ran up there and made 3-4 offers/options in a last ditch effort. I just hope he didn't offer anything close to $20+ for 7 years.

Wow, that was a short honeymoon.
Idiots in the media already questioning the tactics of the front office.
A lot of things happened yesterday that forced the Rangers hand a little bit.

I wish there was a little more accountability in the media.
They flip flop almost as much as Sully does. One minute they'll sing the praises of a person/team/player/coach. Then the next minute they want him fired.
The same people who were calling for Wash's head last April were banging pots saying he's the Manager of the Year.
They can spew out any crap they want and call people out for things they perceive as mistakes (even though they're just pencil neck idiots who don't have a clue). When they are proven wrong they just flip back over and say they've been on board all along.
I realize this is just the way it goes, but its tiring.
