For once fischer has put together a valid thought rather than just mindless shit talking, very nice. Stubbs, I second your thoughts on CCR. I have never seen what people like so much about those guys.
I also second rp50pr returning to this area.

My bad...what's sad is that I posted it, caught two grammatical mistakes and modified it. But I failed to see the obvious.
Second on Honeybrowne. But they're new record isn't half bad. But on their other stuff the only thing that was decent was Texas Angel.
I happen to really like RRB. I've had a chance to just chill w/ Randy before for a few minutes. He shops at American Eagle just like most other generic 20-something white guys and lets out smelly farts. The first time I ever saw him was at Hatricks and I didn't even know who he was. This guy walks over to the urinal next to me and you can tell he's about two shots shy of passing out. He lets out this rancid, loud fart and walks away. Twenty minutes later I see the same guy walk up on stage and strap on a guitar. Brady is just an awesome guy too and will talk to you like he's your best friend. When you're as ugly as that bunch is, its easy to stay humble.
For my money, though, Jack is always #1.
Finch, I second your second...which I guess is thirding my first...is that like sticking it to yourself?
Fischer, good point. We sell them out more than we think they "sell us out." It must be homeroom or lunch period or something, huh?

I like Randy Rogers too. What I should have said is that although he is doing something different and cool now, he has potential to REALLY do it. If anyone is going to be able to lead "texas country" out of it's rut, I think it would be him. He doesn't do what everyone else does, yet people still love him. When he pushes it further, he will be huge.

Yeah, Randy definitely has some stuff that is just an inch away from "this is extremely badass". I think he will do it eventually, he definitely has the resources now. I am going to see him opening for Brad Paisley later this month.

Ditto Baron. This Time Around gets me going every time. Makes me want to shove the finger up the ass of every girl who has ever pissed me off...kind if like a bitter shocker, I guess. Roller Coaster is one of the best, if not the best, album that this genre has ever produced. Radney did a hell of a job as producer on it. I've always been a huge fan of his music and he definately showed a completely different side on that record. I wonder if he's working their new record that should be out soon.

I kind of remember a few of randy's new songs from chilifest, one sounded badass, like an extesion from his last album.

Finch, I'll end the layout on your question. I happen to like EYB. Living in Denton for six years, I got a chance to hear them at the generic places like the RBar, Mother's way back when, and I think they even played Ricks before the Duke Boys decided to burn the place down for insurance money...and honestly, they beat me. I really didn't care to hear them play. But then they hooked up w/ the genius of Frank Liddell who really helped them find the sound they were looking for. Level is in heavy rotation on my changer and I can honestly say that there's not one song that I don't dislike. As far as what kind of music it is, I don't know if you can label it country...but isn't that the point? To try to break down the barriers and not get trapped into one kind of sound? RP, I'm sure you have about 20 other songs that are ok, but already sound like a handful of your other ones, right? That's what I like about BTSO. Every song is different. Every song stands alone. Now, Jack is my favorite performer and artist and I may have a slight man crush on him, but I can honestly say that with all the records he's put out, he has yet to even accomplish that. I'm on a tangent here, but needless to say, I think EYB's Level is great. They're breaking down barriers, and I hope they continue to do what they've done w/ this record.
This being said, what about Aaron Watson? I think he's a great writer. He keeps it simple, is great at wording the obvious, and I think he has the potential to have some crossover success. This most likely won't happen, but I can see the likes of a Gary Allen or Joe Nichols recording one of his songs.
Also, what happened to Bruce Kidder? If he's gone maybe you guys can get more play.

I love Aaron Watson... I know I don't have as sophistocated an ear as most of you do, but to me he sounds different than anything else out there right now. He puts on a great show...not too much reverb and BS talking. Just good music and a great atmosphere. I do think, though, that if anyone we are talking about is straight up "country" it would be him, which is a good thing.

I also agree that AW is badass. Like Fischer, my ear is not very sophistocated and I don't know all those big words that Stubbs used but to me he writes great songs and has a great sound. He is one I could see jumping into the mainstream sometime soon without having to give in to the typical nashville sound. Also, Shut Up and Dance is just one badass song.
P.S. Thank you Stubbs for answering my question. Your input is always welcome, though not always respected.

matt- thanks for the compliments. And you're right, I have started countless songs that I had to give up on because they were too much like something I've already done. I like Eli Young too. They are hometown boys, which is cool. They made level at the same place we made btso, and they are excellent guys. Their record is amazing and is getting them a lot of attention. You can go to cmt.com and find the "studio 330 sessions" and see them play. I don't know much about Aaron Watson, I've only heard him in passing. It was cool though. Is Bruce gone? I didn't know that.
scheu - that's crazy that you have a buddy that knows my grandpa. Yeah, Hughes Springs is the town. What's his name?

Fisch, you hit right on the head. He's traditional in a post-modern world-a breath of fresh air in a genre gone stale. His sappy ballads are a breath of fresh air. Its pure. Its just him and the song. I've heard a few cuts off the new one that came out earlier this week and it sounds great. If I'm not mistaken, Lloyd Maines produced it and once again he works his magic. A lot of guys that began using him several years ago have gone on to 'bigger' names but he's always stayed true to the songwriter and doesn't let the music get in the way of the message conveyed. I always loved what he did with Pat Green and I hope he gets back to the basics that made his early records so popular. Back to Watson, I wasn't all that impressed with Honkeytonk Kid as a whole, but there are a few songs in there that show how talented he is. Reckless showed he can amp it up and have a good time. Its probably his boldest song. Fool's paradise showed he can be introspective w/o being sappy and Honkeytonk Kid showed his crooning side. He was on the Ranch the other morning and was about the most down to earth, unassuming guy I'd ever heard. I can't wait to pick up San Angelo and see if he can take it to the next level.

I have been told that I look like Aaron Watson...He should be so lucky.
I saw AW the other day at Chilifest and he played some of the cuts off of the new album and they were pretty good...Its hard to hear songs for the first time when you are about 35 beers into a bender.
