No rain this weekend. I'm going back to Vernon to dove hunt. I probably won't shoot a thing, but I'll post a report either way.
I'm also going to set up my game camera for deer season. Should have done that about 3 months ago, but whatever.

I forgot to report on last Sundays trip.
I drove out to the public fields west of Sanger. I set up in what I thought would be a good place, between the maize field and the pond, but it was pretty wet out there. I could see a bunch of dove flying across the field feeding, so just set up and waited for them to come in for water.
After about an hour, a few flew right in to me, and I got one of them downed. Reed ran out and got it, and turned asshole on me. He came back and stood about 5 feet in front of me, then turned and bolted off with it. He hasn't done this in a really long time. I chased him around considering peppering his ass for about 20 minutes. Noticed I missed about 10-15 other dove who flew right by while I was dealing with his sorry ass. Finally, I gave up. He ate the bird. Then eventually came back and sat next to me like nothing happened.
Then, the beating ensued. He got the worse beating he's ever had from me before. I tied him down to a hay bale I was sitting up against, and didn't let him off until we went home. No more birds to report. I have never been so pissed at him.
We'll see what happens tomorrow...

He turns worthless after you beat his ass with that leather leash. The trainer said the same thing about a shock collar. Once he gets zapped a few times, he won't go get the birds unless you push him.
He doesn't have it like some of those bird dogs. Just a big ole pet.

a dog can be a great pet.
a dog can be a great bird dog.
very, very seldom do you see a great pet that is a great bird dog.
Of all the dogs my dad had back when he hunted quail, he had one that was both a great hunter and great pet. And that dog was freaking special. I mean big time special.

Yeah. Those real bird dogs are serious workers. They don't do the pet thing.
Reed is a good pet. And is usually pretty dang loyal. But man, he will pull a stunt every now and then that makes you scratch your head.

He's still pretty young isn't he? Just give him some time.
One thing I would suggest is to not chase him around. He probably thinks it is some kind of game and the he isn't doing anything wrong. Then when you beat his ass he has no idea what he did wrong and then turns worthless for the day. If he does that again just stand there and wait for him to bring you the bird. Or maybe walk off a little bit and see if he will follow you. If he still runs off wait for him to come back and then beat his ass.
Or maybe feed him a little bit before you go so he won't be so hungry.

Yeah. He'll be 2 in a few months. You've still got some time then. Next year will be his make or break year.

He's a lab.
They are puppies until they are 3 or so. I agree. Next year he should be a lot better.
