Well, Micah and I were planning on going to Vernon to dove hunt this past weekend. So was Fischer, but he backed out at the last minute. Then, Justin called out of no where and jumped along for the weekend. Good thing he did, and I'll get to that later.
So, Friday, we pack it all up and head Northwest. The rain was light, and we thought we may get a little wet, but would tough it out anyway. After 4-5 beers a piece, we get to Vernon and head over to Lytle's new place, then proceed to drink until 2AM. Get up at 6:30, and find out the original place we were going had flooded over night, and we'd have to try somewhere else. On the fly, my mom set us up with this new place that would be 'much easier to get in and out of' no matter what the rain did. So, we headed out there in the drizzle. After Lytle got the gates and shot at 4 birds from the back of the truck while driving, we made it out to where we wanted to set up. Birds were flying everywhere.
I set up the mojos and decoys, as Matt, Micah and Justin all walked the field firing shots here and there. Reed ran crazy for a minute or two in the light rain. No birds downed after about 15 minutes, and I didn't even have my gun loaded yet. Micah shot a random black bird and Reed fetched the nasty thing up for him. Then came the turd floater. Right as I got the shotgun loaded it started pouring. We sat in the truck for a few minutes thinking it would pass, but it kept getting worse.
At this point, we realized what we were getting ourselves into. On the drive out to this place, we traveled about 8 miles down these dirt roads, that were basically drainage for all the surrounding fields. We decided we better get the hell out of there before it was too late. Quickly loaded all the shit back up in the pouring rain and got out of there. No one wanted to get gates because of the rain, but little did they know what was about to happen.
I have a crew cab chevy colorado, and it's not 4 wheel drive. We started out on the road back to town, and there are no ditches, so there's about 6-8 inches of water standing already. It's all sand, so we're making progress slowly. Thank God it wasn't clay. Well, we get down to a low spot in the road where two fields run-off. Now the water is about 2 feet deep, and it looks like the Guadalupe at the chute, but way bigger. I decide to try to get some momentum up and push through it, since it's still pouring and only getting worse. Right as I hit it we bogged down and got pulled ass end into the wash out from the field to the road. My bed is now halfway under water and water is halfway up the back door on the drivers side. Back tires are both all the way under. Stuck.
I'm flipping out now as the water is rising, and wondering what the hell to do. Reed is whining from the back, since his kennel now has about 6 inches of water in it. Water is seaping in the back door. Micah and Lytle decide to leave all their valuables behind and jump out the other side of the truck and drag Justin with them. They get behind the truck in over waist deep water and start to push, while I floor it. We get out of the washout, but can't move any further. Then, fully clothed, the three of them push the truck about another 600 yards as I lay on the gas until we get to higher ground. We were going about 5 mph. They all finally jumped in the back and we made it out.
My truck and the boys had sand everywhere now. It looked like we just ran it into the ocean at the beach and let it sink. Good guys to have with me or I would have still been sitting out there.
So, we went and showered up, did some laundry, and washed the truck the rest of the morning. Ate some lunch and watched some football that afternoon. Then went out to another place far from any dirt roads to hunt. It rained on us there, but we put down a 30 pack and got to shoot about a box of shells each. Mostly at the empties. We downed 4 birds, but had a hell of a time.

Great story, Sully. I liked the part where the poor people were out in the driving rain pushing the dry, rich guy's truck the length of 6 football fields and out of danger.
Oh yeah, the part where you made them ride in the back with the dog while you smoked a big cigar was pretty funny too.

Good thing my truck is pretty light I guess. It was freaking hairy there for a few minutes though. Took us about an hour to drive 8 miles.

that is a good story.
Wish I was there... except for the fact that I had a football game.

Wow...I didn't think the dog's life was in question.
Thanks for the sympathy, Mrs. Fischer.

Looks like he's one bird over his limit unless one of those is a eurasian collared.
