It was Fall 2001…I was finding my way around the big city of Denton with Lytle. Lytle and I had both moved there from Vernon for school. Two small town kids trying to make it in the city…
We met up with a couple of girls who had just moved there around the same time from Vernon. They lived in the Ramsgate apartments off Bernard St. They had this neighbor that would sit outside in a lawn chair and smoke cigs. Lytle, who will strike up a conversation with a fence post, would wait by the window of the girls apt. until the neighbor would step out to smoke, then Lytle would join him. Seeing that I didn’t smoke, and was slightly more reserved, I didn’t join them for a while. But, eventually I made it out there and we started hanging out at the two apts a few times a week drinking until the sun came up.
The neighbor was RP. And during these long nights, with enough alcohol, Rodney would break out the guitar. He would play mostly REK, Max Stalling and several other well-known Texas tunes, which were mostly new to us. I think he was writing a few songs, but wouldn’t really share them. I don’t think he really considered doing the music thing at this point.
After that Spring semester, Lytle, our buddy Dave and I rented this house on Jacquelyn St. This place turned into party central within a matter of days, and RP spent more time on our couch than his apt. This was in May of 02, and I met Fischer at work that summer. He started joining us, among many others, and the festivities were almost nightly. RP started playing some solo gigs around the metromess, mostly at the Thirsty Armadillo in the stockyards and a few of us would drag as many people as we could to them.
Eventually, Rodney got a little band together. Brooks joined him early on, along with Henry Story and this older guy named Doug. This moment in time is a bit of a blur to me…
Enter Danny Skinner (king). Doug was left in the dust. Zach Galindo enters the picture, through Danny, I believe. They recorded an album within the next year (BTSO). Fischer introduces Finch, Frampton, Scheu, Stubbs, among others to the band.
Henry graduated and moved off to Cali for work. Adrian joins the band after a number of drummer-less shows. Adrian eventually spins off with his own band (oso closo), and Gabe steps right in, right out of the bowels of Andy’s bar on the square, where we frequented and most still do. Without getting into much detail about the band (maybe they can explain the rest to you), I’ll end it. The rest is history in the making…

i'll have to request it at the next show Do it. I love the Slaid Cleeves version but Rodney really makes it his own.

Was RP working at the Subway during this time?

RP wasn't working at Subway. I think that was during high school.
After a year in that house, the place was a wreck. Holes in walls and doors (Lytle gets a little pissed when he loses in Playstation games), carpet stained so bad you couldn't tell what color it used to be. The garage ceiling caved in during the last couple of months. The gutters were falling off the front of the house. Both of those last two could be attributed to the fact that when we got drunk, we would climb up on the roof.
RP, Lytle, Dave and Micah all got another house in town. They were there for a couple of years while I made the biggest mistake of my life to date. During the last 6-8 months of those two years, I swapped places with RP circa 02, and slept on their couch most of the time. The next year, Dave and I got an apt at Timberlinks in Denton, and I finished up school. RP, Lytle and Micah got the house they are in now. Dave started taking pilot lessons and now works for American Eagle. We never really hear from him anymore.

That house on Jaqueline Street was awesome. The garage there gave me the incentive to have my own outstanding garage (Remember Cheyenne Street Finch?)
We had a lot of fun there.

Dave is a good guy.
Biggest mistake-what's his name?
I was introduced to the band through Henry. He was the teller at my bank. I was at the CD release show. I didn't know anyone. At the same time Fischer was telling me about RP. I thought Fischer was talking about either Randy Rogers or Rodney Hayden. Eventually he played BTSO for me in College Station and I realized he was talking about RP (I think I had the CD at the time). I met Sully about that time too. Eventually I met the band and it was through Fischer, through Sully. It was like two worlds colliding. It was fate.
