You're right...they've never played Charleston Souther and Northern Colorado in the same year so Hawaii had a better year than TCU could ever imagine having.
SMU hasn't been to a bowl in 23 years. TCU has been 8 or 9...please tell me your definition of recent.

We are not saying that TCU hasn't been better in the past few years. But to a recruit, a MWC championship ring doesn't shine very bright. neither do no name bowl runner up trophies.
At least SMU had the Pony Express and all of that before the death penalty.

Exactly. We are talking about the future. SMU is on the rise. TCU is standing still. In the words of the great Jimmy Johnson, "If you aint getting better, you're getting worse".

All credibility they gained during their 5-6 year run was ruined with the death penalty. No one takes them seriously. They are a joke program.
You're right...SMU is on the rise...their two wins next year will make them on the rise.
Going from an 11 win season to an 8 win season or a 6 win season to one win...I wonder which ones recruits will like better?
And Mike, how do you explain Ohio State? They got smoked two years in a row...are they getting better or worse? Looks to me like they stayed the same.

tOSU was way worse this year than last.
In the days of SMU's prowess EVERYONE was cheating. Its well documented. They still have just as much credibility as any school in that era.
Many people take them seriously. Maybe you and your fellow tcu friends don't, but a lot of people do, and will in the near future.

Not sure what you mean by "explaining OSU" but I would say their reputation as well as the Big 10's has been damaged since last year.

More recent history? They haven't been ranked in 23 years! WTF? Maybe if you're talking about a history of losing. And right now I do see them as a 2nd tier team. They are what they are. The MWC isn't BCS nor should it be right now. And Sully, it's not the MAC. Huh?

Looks like SMU burned a bridge. Fisch, does this happen a lot?
Jones not winning friends and influencing people:
Jones, SMU Leave Lee Player Hanging Without Scholarship DEWSBy CHRIS PARRY Sports Writer
Robert E. Lee senior defensive lineman Ralston Dews was counting the days until he could sign a scholarship to Southern Methodist University.
Dews committed to the Mustangs in September, and despite SMU going 1-11 this past season, a new coaching regime headed by former Hawaii coach June Jones made it all the more appealing to honor his commitment.
But SMU had other ideas and waited until almost three weeks before National Signing Day to inform Dews that his services were no longer required.
After learning of this, the Dews family contacted Lee head coach Mike Owens.
"They haven't even called Ralston since they got their new (coaching staff), so today Ralston's dad called up there and was told that SMU decided yesterday that Ralston doesn't fit our scheme and we are not going to honor his commitment," Owens said.
News of Dews' situation sparked Owens into action. He first called SMU Director of Football Operations Randy Ross.
"I called over there and at first he tells me, 'We really didn't commit him,'" Owens said. "Then he comes back and said he did commit."
Ross told Owens that SMU Athletic Director Steve Orsini gave Jones the option of honoring commitments made by the previous regime.
Dews said by telephone Friday night he was taken aback by the news
"I was disappointed because I worked hard. I was looking forward to playing football for SMU next year," Dews said. "I am getting calls from other schools right now, but I really do want to go to SMU and get a good education there."
All verbal commitments are nonbinding. A player can change his commitment to another school at any time.
It's just a rarity when it's the other way around.
Especially when the school is SMU, which has struggled to recruit against the likes of UT, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU.
"I told (Ross) I've been coaching 25 years and you are the first people that had ever done anything like this to a kid," Owens said. "Ralston didn't sign with (former head coach Phil) Bennett; he's committed to Southern Methodist University."
Dews has two weeks to try and line up another commitment when many colleges by now have filled their allotment of potential scholarships.
Owens said he's contacting several schools, but none are Division I Bowl Subdivision.
"I've called several places and I plan on calling some more," Owens said.
As for if and when SMU will ever be able to recruit a Robert E. Lee player? Owens said not while he is head coach.
"I wouldn't dare let them step on this campus and come into my office," Owens said. "I am not going to make my kids jump through hoops so they can wait two weeks before signing day (and change things)."
Media reports talked about a big draw for Jones leaving Hawaii, which he'd just led to an undefeated regular season and Sugar Bowl appearance, was the school being in Texas, one of the nation's best recruiting states.
With this news now spreading around the state, it's not going to be very favorable for Jones and his staff. They already have to try and convince a player to commit to SMU, a school that hasn't been in any bowl game since making the Aloha Bowl in 1984.
"They haven't violated any NCAA rules by doing it, it's just unethical," Owens said. ... That's not the way we do business, not in Texas anyway. Maybe that is how you do business in Hawaii, but not here."

Happens all the time. Nutt regularly did this kind of stuff in Arkansas. He would also promise kids if they would walk on he would give them scholies next year.
It is a shitty thing to do.

I think the kid didn't have a rap sheet and Jones wasn't sure how to handle his kind.

It happens, but it is crappy. I think its better just to bite the bullet and give him the ship. Then, if he doesn't pan out you can run him off later.

Yeah, SMU can't be choosers. It's a buyers market for them.
