I think they were trying to upgrade their coverage by adding the best cb in the draft

Kind of like how the Rangers tried to win the World Series by signing the best player in the game to the richest contract in sports at the expense of developing a balanced roster. Jerry's robbing Steven to pay Jerry Jr. We'll see if it works.

I think we got the best defender in the draft to go play on what was the worst secondary in the league. Pretty good move, in my opinion Cowboys were #23 in ypg and #24 in ypa last year New England was #31 in ypg and #30 in ypa To help out the front 7 the Cowboys upgraded at corner, to help out the secondary the Pats upgraded at D end and LB. Two different schools of thought I guess.

Two completely different teams with different needs.
Again, terrible secondary, gets best cover guy in draft.
New England, horrible everywhere on defense, gets best available defender. Just so happened to be a dl. Don't think for a second they wouldn't have taken Claiborne.
The cowboys have pass rushers. They had no corners.
New England has pretty much nothing.

Demarcus ware, best in nfl. Anthony spencer, average
A couple of other guys I can't think of.
Point is, secondary problems with the cowboys>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> pass rush problems.
If you want to argue that, I can't help you.

IMO, upgrading the pass rush helps the secondary more than upgrading the secondary helps the pass rush.

Maybe. Although that is very debatable. They go hand in hand
Who ever said anything about drafting Claiborne to help the pass rush?
They drafted him to help with the biggest need on that side of the ball. Maybe on the entire team. If the pass rush gets better then that's a plus.

I think there were bigger holes that could have been addressed. Not that I don't think he is a good pick. I would have rather taken a pass rusher and held on to that 2nd rounder.

I mentioned the pass rush would be helped by improving the secondary. My reasoning being, better coverage provides the pass rush more time to materialize. amirite?

Mike, yes you are right. But it's a side benefit. Not an attempt to fix the pass rush problem.
Framp, I don't feel like there was any hole near as big as the secondary. If there is, it's o line. Then linebacker/ dl.

Mike Sherman picking Ryan Tannehill at #8 is like the Bobby Petrino hiring of Jessica Dorrell.

Plus it wasn't just the talent level for CB, I believe they only had 3 DB's on the roster before the Claiborne pick. Thought I heard Norm or someone say that, maybe he meant only 3 with any kind of talent: Carr, Jenkins and that shithead we gave a big contract to, big for his lack of skills anyway.
I just wish I could go to the alternate universe and see what would have happened if we hadn't traded up. I know we could have gotten the top rated gaurd at 14 but the 2nd round pick would be interesting.
