Some magazine broke this down a few years ago. I believe something like 50% of 1st rounders end up never really making an impact, but that was still the highest % of any round. I think the second round was somewhere in the neighborhood of 40%, and the third round was pretty close to the second. The conclusion was the 1st round is your best chance to land an impact player, but the best bang for your buck actually came in the third round. I'm guessing that's why teams like the Pats stockpile 2nd and 3rd round picks. You still have a decent chance of landing a good player, but you don't have to pay them 1st round money.

I asked Bob the original question on the DMN live chat if he subscribed to Norm's taking the best play theory. He said, "I do not agree with his theory in the 1st Round. Too expensive to disregard your team's personal situation. If you have a great QB but no tackles, he says to take the top guy even if he is a QB. That seems fine in the 5th round, but no way in Top 10 with those paychecks."

I agree with Bob, however; if we need let's say a safety at number 12 and the 2nd best safety is available but he is graded a high second round pick, well then I would take the #1 QB who is sliding for some unknown reason if Romo is getting up there in years. Even if Romo is still producing at a top level I don't want to miss an opportunity to draft "Aaron Rodgers" and have him sit on the bench till Romo retires or we trade him.
Like Finch said though it's 50-50 in the first round so that QB could be Aaron Rodgers or Matt Lienart and that safety could be Troy Palomalou or Alan Ball.
But in that type of situation I would take a risk at pick 10-20 on a guy that is supposed to be top 5 talent, for instance, Dez Bryant.

Did y'all notice that Von Miller was included in the lawsuit against the NFL on behalf of the players? I have never seen a player that I had an interest in get so much pub before the draft.
What is cool is that every time they say his name they mention the Ags.

Just saw where the NFLPA is telling 17 of the top college prospects to boycott the NFL draft. Sucks that of course this is the year the Ags have a top pick in the draft and he is caught in the middle of all of this.
