huh? what you said is pretty opposite of what happened according to the show. Mike, there was a reason Arkansas couldn't compete in the SWC during that time. They weren't as dirty as they are now.

Couldn't compete? I seem to remember competing fairly well back then. Course we didn't have the advantage of offering the Trans A&M to kids.

That was the first time I had heard trans A&M, I had a chuckle. Just imagine if he had gone to A&M, championship maybe? I agree that shmu had it coming because they surely were paying above and beyond what anyone else was doing.
Never knew that shmu was the reason the SWC went under either.

And yes, watched every bit of it. I still think they were all doing it to the same extent. SMU just got the short straw. Please don't shed a tear for SMU. They deserved what they got. That's like saying Murderer A doesn't deserve the death penalty because Murderer B got away with their crime. My cousin dated a guy who was a freshman in '89 and he got paid! Not very much but he still got paid. The film also left out the mini-scandal from 2000. Sure, SMU was at the wrong place at the wrong time (three major newspapers competing for quarters) but that doesn't excuse what they did.

Stubbs brought up the main thing working against smu as opposed to the Aggies and whorns.
The Dallas Times Herald was competing with the Dallas Morning News and didn't care who they hurt or what program they brought down to get their story. It was cutthroat.

Just watched it again, or the first part anyway. They talked about everyone paying, and even A&M even paid more than SMU for Mark Lewis.
But, then they roll into SMU setting the standard, up to another level. We are both right.

Also talked about Coach Meyer being a great recruiter, and outrecruiting other schools, regardless of cash

The funny thing is, they never won a title, and A&M, among others, narrowly escaped penalties. I still think the NCAA used SMU as an example, without having to punish the bigger schools. Wrong. A&M, along with over half of the rest of the conference went on probation during this era. SMU got caught paying players while on probation and then got caught trying to cover it up. I don't think they were necessarily out bidding everyone else. then they roll into SMU setting the standard, up to another level. You contradict yourself right here.

I agree with you about Meyer being a great recruiter. That has nothing to do with anything we are talking about.

Prove it...
I know I contradicted myself. I was partly wrong before.
