It's not often that Fischer needs to be corrected...and it's not so much that he's wrong, just ill-informed.
Technically, Irving has 4 high schools. There is the Singley Academy that is very hard on academics and fields no UIL activities of their own. The students are free to participate in any activity of their own for the high school's district in which they reside. When I interviewed there the assistant principal said that about 30% of their students participate in UIL activities but only about 8% are in athletics. Most are in band, orchestra, debate, etc.
That being said, Irving high schools are on the smaller end of the spectrum as far as 5A enrollment. Irving is the smallest with about 2100. Nimitz is next with 23 and some change. MacArthur has around 2500. So Legacy is roughly the same size as Nimitz. In fact, Nimitz was always one of the smallest 5A schools in the state. I think it was in '94 that we met the 5A requirements by 20 students and most people think that the IISD cooked the books that year. Irving schools will never be put in the big-school bracket for football playoffs. They usually get put in districts with Trinity, LD Bell, Duncanville, and Coppell. There was one year that Mac almost was a big school but I think Grapevine (on the small side as well) beat them out by just a small margin to go to the big-school bracket. Traditionally speaking, Irving schools are on the smaller side. The Academy is just a few years old and has about 1600 students so it takes about 500+ students away from each of the other three schools.
