'Dirge' inspires a celebration By Preston JonesStar-Telegram Staff Writer Denton's Rodney Parker has one of those great alt-country voices -- all gargled ashtrays and too many smoky, beery nights filtered through sandpaper. It's in full effect through The Lonesome Dirge, Parker and his backing band Fifty Peso Reward's sophomore album, a disc that feels like an evocation of every aimless night ever spent away from the bright lights and big city. Following the 2004 debut, Blow the Soot Out, Dirge is 11 tracks -- nine originals and a pair of covers (talk about range: Bruce Springsteen's Atlantic City and Kinky Friedman's Wild Man From Borneo) -- produced by Erik Herbst at Denton's Panhandle House. No matter how lonely or weird it sounds at times (10 Lb. Test is quirky, Brother is jangly fun), Parker keeps you riveted throughout. Parker and the Fifty Peso gang will celebrate the release of The Lonesome Dirge at 8 p.m. Friday at Dallas' Granada Theater, with support from the equally stellar Oso Closo (whose gifted frontman, Adrian Hulet, contributes harmony vocals to Dirge), Bleu Edmondson and Mount Righteous. Tickets run $10-$14. Call 972-386-6565 to secure your ducats. For more info: www.rodneyparker.com
