She's Cuban.
Has a Bachelor's degree from Florida International University; Master's degree and doctorate from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University.
Professional experience: Assistant professor at Iowa State University, 1990-1995; professor at Texas A&M University, 1995-present; undersecretary for food safety with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2001-2004; vice chancellor and dean of agriculture and life sciences at Texas A&M, 2005-present
Interests and hobbies: Listens to Cuban and Latin music on her iPod, rides a bicycle for exercise and enjoys Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock and old science fiction movies.
She grew up in Miami. There's a little closet Miami fan in her I think....
