on another note...
Is the Apology just a 6 song EP? Or is there going to be a full length album, too?

this is what brooks posted on RFT..
Hey guys, Just wanted to let everyone know, we drove down to Austin today and started the process of recording a new cd! The whole recording and mixing process will take a couple of weeks, and we are hoping to have the thing available at shows by the end of June. We are really stoked about this project, our first record in over two years. It will most likely be a six song EP, called "The Apology Part 1". And yes, "The Apology Part 2" will be shortly behind. We have been blessed with the chance to work with a producer who we are big fans of, Mike McCarthy. His work includes all of Spoon's albums, Jack Ingram's "Electric", Patty Griffin's newest album, Wade Bowen's newest studio recordings, and tons of other great recordings. Look him up on wikipedia. Mike has us recording the whole thing on vintage instruments and amps, through vintage microphones, onto tape... a very new approach for us.. but the end result is going to rock so hard. He has Rodney singing into a mic that was made in 1964! We are very proud of the new tunes, and it really feels like we have managed to stay true to what makes us unique, but reinvented it enough to keep it interesting. Stay tuned for updates, and we will of course make sure that radio free texas has tracks from the new record before anybody else does.

Thanks for passing that on KL, just one more example of how the band has completely cut ties with this board.

Rodney and I talked about the whole EP thing the other day. I think it's a genius idea and I'm surprised that in the iTunes age more folks aren't doing it. Josh Abbott just released and EP and I look for more people to do it in the future.
It cuts production costs dramatically. You're not always going to go into the studio with a full album ready to cut. You may have 5 or 6 that you want to really concentrate on and before you know it your studio time is up, the budget is near the end of its rope and you still have several songs to cut. You end up with a few songs that, in the artist's own opinion, sound like crap. With an EP you can really hit those 5 or 6 songs hard and not have to worry about the other half of the album. Then you can put those other songs that you ideally would like to cut on a full-length record in your pocket and do those the right way on your second go-round.
With only 6 songs to record and mix you can get your songs to the shelves and airwaves much quicker. And honestly, how many times does a record get more than a few singles? Not often. It's been two years since they've come out with new stuff and about a year since the last single. A full-length record would push things back a few months. Unless you're an A-lister like Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. the key is to stay as fresh on the minds of the listener as possible. I think the EP will put them in a position to where people will be ready for more in about 9-12 months, which would coincide perfectly for part deux.

Cory Morrow just released an EP too.
Stubbs, your reasoning sounds pretty solid.
Exalt!
