All this talk about soccer has given me an idea. Let's build an American soccer team and see how the local soccer expert thinks they will do. I don't know the exact breakdown of a soccer team (positions, what those positions are responsible for on the field etc.) so a little help with that would be greatly appreciated.
You can only use current American professional athletes, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis. You get the picture. No current or former soccer players allowed, we only want the best of the best. I'll start us off.
Goalie: Dwight Howard- Considering his wing span probably takes up half the net, it will be pretty dang tough to get a ball past this guy. He is also very quick for a big man so keeping up with these guys shouldn't be too big of a problem. Not to mention most of them will be to scared to come within 10 feet of him, so most of the shots will be far enough away that he has plenty of time to react.
That is the only soccer position I know so I will need some help to keep this going.

That is why we need Meyer to give us a break down of positions and their responsibilty on the field.

I just assumed that the rest of the people out there just ran around and kicked the ball.

Haha
That is what it looks like, but I'm guessing there is a little more to it than that.

I don't even know how many players are on the field from each team. What about Shawn Bradley for backup goalie?

I'm pretty sure 11, but I don't know if the goalie is included in that or not.

11 players on the field, including the goalkeeper. For this team, lets play a 4-4-2. 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 forwards, and a goalkeeper. It would look like...
----------------------------------GK
---------------------CB----------------------CB -------RB----------------------------------------------------LB
RM-----------------------------------------------------------------LM
------------------------------------DM ------------------------------AM
--------------------F--------------------------F
Goalkeeper - must be fearless and athletic. Typical height of a top tier gk is 6'4-6'5. They need to have great hands, and the ability to deal with high balls as well as low shots.
Defense - Must be physical, and possess some skill on the ball.
Right Back/Left Back - In terms of size, you can get away with undersized backs. They need to be athletic, and have the ability to defend well and support in the attack.
Center Backs - Need to be big and physical.
Defensive Mid - Provides cover for the back 4, breaks up attacks as they come out of the midfield, typically a bigger player.
Attacking Mid - Must be creative, pulls the strings in the midfield
Left/Right Outside Mids - Provide width, they work up and down the sidelines the whole game, serve balls into the box for the forwards to attack. Must be good at attacking/service as well as possess the ability to defend.
Forwards - Typically you want to have 1 target forward, a guy you can play early balls into who can hold up play while waiting for support from the other forward and the midfielders. The other forward is typically a speedy guy who has the ability to get in behind the defense quickly, as well as stretch them with his runs off the ball creating more space for the midfielders to move into and for the other forward.
If you need clarification on a a position, just say so.....

Steve Nash is a foward. David Buehler is on defense cause he is tough and can boot it. We need some speed on the outside so I say darren sproles for right midfielder.

Steve nash used to play soccer so he is out. I am sure that Buehler did too.
Sproles might be a good addition.

Steve Nash would be more of an attacking midfielder. A player who is able to bring the ball at the defence and force them to commit to him before he releases the ball to a forward who is now in on goal.

He was a big time soccer player when he was younger. He quit playing when he realized how gay it was.
