Thanks Framp and Meyer. Now that I understand the rule...sort off, why is that a rule?

Fischer...yes it's a joke.
To keep people from just hanging out in front of the goal. I mean with all the scoring in soccer they had to have a way to keep it down. ha

I know we give you a lot of hell for being a soccer coach/fan, but in all honesty that is one of the dumbest rules I have ever heard of. That's like telling a baseball player he can only step in the batters box if the ball has already crossed the plate. No sense what so ever.
Now please go over to my soccer team thread and tell us about all the positions on a soccer field.

Think of offsides in football terms. You are going to let a reciever start in the endzone, or a defensive player start in the backfield.

Think of offsides in football terms. You are going to let a receiver start in the endzone, or a defensive player start in the backfield. Sort of I guess, but isn't really more like saying the receiver can only go in the endzone if there are already two defenders in there. Or the receiver can't run past the defenders until the ball is in the air.

Offsides in football is totally different than in Soccer.

What it is doing is preventing a player starting from a position where he has an advantage. For example, you wouldn't want the other team's linebacker starting a play in the backfield, just like you wouldn't want the other team's forward starting in behind the defense.

Works for me. I guess some rules in football don't make a lot of sense if you don't grow up watching the game.
