RODNEY PARKER & THE 50 PESO REWARD - "Blow the Soot Out"
Growing up everyone, everywhere, rebels against something. It's a rite of passage, inevitable, and primal. So, it's only natural that Rodney Parker and The 50 Peso Reward, when asked if they were inlfuenced by country music growing up, would forthrightly state that their music is more rooted in the rock of their youth, but seasoned by the music they've all come to appreciate in later years. No one place dictates what 'country' is anymore, and that's a good thing considering how far outside the 'Nasheville' norm the music on this record is. Even the term alt-country has begun to fail us as a label/category, having made room for mediocre acts under its wing, so it wouldn't be right to call Rodney Parker and The 50 Peso Reward alt-country. It wouldn't do them justice. Why do say-nothing songs get played on country radio when there are much more thoughtful offerings like the ones on "Blow the Soot Out"? Aching and melodic, Rodney Parker takes us forward with his band's brand of country rock. They have an inner momentum that propels everything they do, making every track worth a listen. When you have as many records as I know you probably do, it's a great feeling to land upon a disc that has 'solid listening' written all over it. From the opener, "Just the Sounds" to "Drive Away" and "Bring Me My Gun" (with all their boot kicking bravado), to the farmer's lament on "200 Acres", then down low to the ground with the bittersweet heartache of "When I Wake Up" and "Highway Blues". This record possesses the whole range of emotions that make music great. Some of the chord changes and fills might sound a bit more rock, but this is solid Texas country, and it plays like Lone Star cowboy soul.
