Yeah...i think it may be time for a label. Or do you make more on the album if you release independently?

Last week there was mention of the show at the Float Trip on the Texas Music Chart's website. It spoke very highly of the boys. I can't find it now. I don't think they archive their articles.

Yeah...i think it may be time for a label. Or do you make more on the album if you release independently? Depends on how many you sell. You sign with a label and they have to get their cut so the artist isn't making as much per record as an indy...but the label can also market it better than doing it yourself. It all depends on forecasted sales. Pat Green sold over 200k indy records and became a millionaire. He's sold over a million records with two labels and has become a multi-millionaire. You also have to factor in time. How much is your time worth to you? Would you rather have someone else doing the legwork or doing it yourself? Either way is rewarding.

It depends on the deal. A small independent deal wouldn't make much sense for us financially. Especially because they probably would just hire the same staff we already have, and take all of our record sales for it. The way it works is, your cut is somewhere around 15%. The problem is you have to pay back your debt to the label out of that 15%. So unless you are moving serious units you never get out of debt. This might be worth it if their in-house promotions were really making a difference or if they were hiring a huge staff. You'd lose money on records but probably more than make up for it at shows. But a small indie label doesn't have that kind of power or money on hand. And even if they do, it's probably not going to the new kids. We've known lots of people who've fallen into that trap. You're in a deal where the label won't spend any money to promote you, so your record isn't selling. They damn sure don't want to advance you another $50,000 to make a record, but they don't want to release you either because who knows what could happen and it's not costing them anything at that point to keep you on the roster. So, since under your contract you can't put out a record unless it goes through the label, you get stuck. Unable to make a new product. That's the type of shit that breaks up bands. Gotta be very careful about it.

Interesting, so your saying I should start a small indy label and take all the money from unknown bands.

Haha! No, they can't be unknown or then you'll just lose your ass. They have to be big enough to move records but stupid enough to sign a bad deal. There are plenty of them out there.
